Discover the age-old craft of veneering in this hands-on, three-day workshop designed for makers of all skill levels. You'll walk away with a stunning, one-of-a-kind serving tray, and the foundational skills to tackle veneer projects of your own.
Over three immersive days, you'll learn the complete veneering process from start to finish. Begin by exploring different veneer species and matching patterns, then select and dry-lay your own book-matched veneer, the technique that creates that beautiful mirror-image grain pattern prized by fine woodworkers. You'll joint your veneer edges and carefully tape the seams, aligning the pattern to create a seamless, symmetrical face.
Your tray's solid wood edge banding, matched to the same species as your face veneer, is attached and leveled to the substrate before veneering begins, creating a clean, furniture-grade edge that blends seamlessly with the book-matched face above it. From there, you'll prep your substrate and glue up your book-matched veneer and backer sheet, pressing everything together in a vacuum bag for even, reliable clamping pressure across the whole panel.
The final day brings it all together: trimming veneer flush to the banding, scraping and sanding to a glass-smooth surface, and applying a hand-rubbed finish. You'll finish by mounting metal handles for a polished, functional touch, then step back to admire and photograph your completed tray.
By the end of this class, you'll understand veneer selection and matching, cutting and taping technique, substrate and edge-banding prep, vacuum bag pressing, trimming, hardware mounting, and finishing, the essential skills behind every great veneered piece. Small class sizes ensure plenty of individual attention, and you'll leave not just with a beautiful tray, but with the confidence to bring veneering into your own shop.
No prior veneering experience required, just curiosity and a willingness to get your hands into the glue.
